WHAT:

Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada (CCSN) is pleased to announce the Food For Life Celebration, which will include the unveiling of their expanded food service programs and a special free community meal for men, women and children in need, Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. More than 100 volunteers and staff will prepare and serve 1,200 meals.

Congresswoman Dina Titus, Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly and representatives from the offices of U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, U.S. Rep. Joe Heck and U.S. Sen. Dean Heller are scheduled to attend the unveiling and community meal.

The Hands of Hope Community Food Pantry redesign includes a 3,090-square-foot expansion and new fixtures for food storage, display and distribution. The Meals on Wheels kitchen has been consolidated into the St. Vincent Lied Dining Facility kitchen, adding 3,778 square feet of kitchen space. The food service expansion will allow more than 600 clients to be removed from the Meals on Wheels waiting list and increase the number of food pantry clients to 1,000 each week, a 33 percent boost over current levels.

Additional Event Information

Additionally, CCSN will announce the winner of the Food For Life Challenge, which featured three Southern Nevada food journalists – Debbie Hall, Al Mancini and Mitchell Wilburn – creating meals from scratch based on the food donations available in the kitchen. Each Thursday throughout the month of October, their menus were served to CCSN clients during the free community meal and rated based on taste, creativity and presentation.

The Food for Life Celebration will also be the official kickoff for CCSN’s 30th Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. It is the Las Vegas Valley’s largest turkey giveaway, and CCSN is hoping to raise 4,000 frozen turkeys and assorted desserts and fixings to ensure our community’s less fortunate have the Thanksgiving they deserve.
